Organised by MY Events International, the World Bloggers and Social Media Summit 2011 was held at the Putra World Trade Center (PWTC) from the 15th till the 16th of June. A successor to the last year’s Asian Bloggers and Social Media Conference 2010, the Summit features speakers from across the world, including YB. Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, Minister of Information, Communication & Culture; Yoshito Hori, Chairman Founder, Globis Group; Dave Duarte, Managing Director, Huddlemind Labs; and Iim Fahima Jachja, CEO & Online Strategist, Virtual Consulting – all of which were gathered to share their experiences and practices on social media channels.
The Summit started on a high note, with an opening keynote address by YB. Dato’ Seri Utama Dr. Rais Yatim, who spoke on the topic of “Revolutionizing the Masses Through Social Media”. The Summit then proceeded to deliver talks and panel discussions on topics like “Managing your Investment in Social Media”, “Lifestyle Blogging” and “The Laws of Social Media – Ethics, Etiquette and Legality.”
While it was unfortunate that former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamad, who was supposed to make a speech on the subject of “Forging a Conquest Through Responsible Blogging”, was unable to attend, the Summit still managed to finish on a thought-provoking note, with discussions of Business Blogs and the usage of Social Media in Press and Politics to carry on the Summit.
The next Summit is scheduled to be held in Dubai in October 2011, for bloggers and social media practitioners from the Gulf Region. Read up on our full, comprehensive coverage in the coming July 2011 issue!

The Broadband World forum Asia 2011 took place in KLCC Convention Centre, KL on two days, 10-11 May 2011. Held together with IP & TV Forum Asia 2011, this event bring together ISPs and industry players to share the latest industry trends at various forums over the two days. Looking at the itinerary, the topics and the presenters are very interesting.
There are also an exhibition which is free for visitors to attend. Alas, this event is not well publicised and many people who might be interested are not aware of the event. Certainly it is not as big as CommunicAsia or BroadcastAsia which will be taking place next month, but the topic is of interest to many companies who are involved in IT and internet.
In the area of IPTV, two Malaysian booths were seen.
One is by selecTV – an IPTV project which is one of EPP (Entry Point Project) announced by the Government of Malaysia recently. It is described as an ‘Hospitality IPTV’ that aims to create a cutting-edge platform to distribute Malaysian content to local and international hotels implemented with SELECTV IPTV.
After receiving an email from their CEO to visit their booth on the launch of their service, I was piqued to learn more. Disappointingly, none of the staff manning the booth seem to know much about the service and clueless about the launch! A sign of what to expect next?
I sat there for a few minutes, fiddling with the remote control and the demo set. No one came to offer any explanation, maybe they knew that this guy is going to be asking a lot of questions.
Another booth is from Telekom Malaysia, who is also the Host Service Provider partner for the event. As expected they are very keen to promote the Unifi – Fibre-To-The-Home service. As this is also IPTV Forum, I expected to see a bit more about their IPTV service – called HyppTV.
Alas, most of their terminals are showing about Unifi broadband service and how the public can subscribe to it. Clearly it has got the Chef there interested!
Let’s hope the event organiser come back again next year and with a bit more publicity , maybe we can have more exhibitioners there. It’s a good event that deserve more.

The original BlackBerry Curve was a HUGE hit in Malaysia and I’ve always told people that it is this model that made the other fruit popular in Malaysia.
The only problem I had with the Curve was that it doesn’t have 3G connectivity, which is, to me, a huge deal breaker. Fret no more because the Curve 3G (8300) is here!
No word on what the telcos are offering at the moment but from what we know, the Curve 3G will be available in September. We’ll try to get our hands on one. Now where’s the Torch?

This is not an event per se but we’ve just got an email telling us that the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 will be available in Malaysia from October 2010 onwards.
It will be available in two editions, Office for Mac Home and Student 2011, as well as Office for Mac Home and Business 2011. The Home and Student edition will be priced at RM468 for single user and RM599 for the family pack. Home and Business 2011 will be retailed at RM768 for single user and RM1,099 with two installs.
Microsoft also told us that from today onwards, anyone who buys Office 2008 will be able to upgrade it to the newer version when it comes out, free of charge!
P.S. We couldn’t get a better picture for this entry from Microsoft’s press site but from what we gather from that single picture on top, all icons are redesigned. Stay tuned for more updates.

Media Prima Group launched their new video portal, tonton.com.my, last Friday at Sunway Convention Centre with the tagline ‘our future start here’.
The CEO of the new online media outfit, Ahmad Izham Omar made a dramatic entrance on the stage with the opening gambit performed by the Final Showdown 2010 winner, Wakaka Crew. As the picture here shows, he looked like Steve Job trying to promote iPad.
With RM10 million investment put in, the video portal will put online the group’s impressive 30,000 hours of content library, combining programs from TV3, ntv7, 8TV and TV9. In addition English, Korean, Chinese and Hindustan films and serials will also be available.
The portal, which can be compared to Hulu.com is currently available in beta stage. However, unlike Hulu.com, tonton.com.my will be free to watch. They’ve decided to go with ad supported business model. The system is put together by Accenture with the engine powered by Viocorp, a Sydney based company.
The portal is almost 100% flash powered. Whilst it look great, we wonder how will this effect viewing for non-Flash compatible platform.

In the mean time, let’s cheer for more content and more choice for Malaysian web users – hurrah! We’ve tried it with Unify broadband connection, the watching experience is good and buffer free – even when you hook your notebook to a big screen LCD TV.
