Yeah… it seems that the catfight is going to get more interesting by the day. Yesterday, Microsoft announced that they are putting their cash-cow app “Microsoft Office” on line. By 2010, a new lite version of Microsoft Office called “Office Web” will be available online for free.

Will the Cloud King shudders with fear? After all, the Desktop King recently encroached the Cloud Kingdom with their own search engine called ‘Bing’ and now they have put their most potent arsenal in the Cloud. (Office brought in US$4.5 billion of revenue for first quarter of 2009 out of the total US$13.6 billion earned by Microsoft)

Office Web will be part of the Office 2010 general release, which is slated for the first half of next year. And if your organisation is a ‘volume license customers’ – you can run it through your own webserver. Mere mortals like us though will have to access Office Web through Microsoft’s Windows Live portal.

How will you accept this new development? Personally, I’ve tried Google Apps. And with our standard of Internet connectivity in this country, it is a very frustrating experience. So I don’t give much thought about it and I suspect the same nonchalant attitude will be reserved towards Microsoft’s new project.

Really, if I want free office applications to do my work, I could just take out this month’s CHIP cd and install the free OpenOffice.org 3.1. They’ve improved a lot recently and I don’t have to be a slave to the Net to do my work. PS. just in case, we should also avoid the birth of Terminator’s Skynet Superman II: Director’s cut release .

It appears that the software that managed to put a PC on every desk will soon be retired. Very hard to imagine the ubiquitous Windows no longer running our lives. Yet this is what a new report has suggested.

Apparently this is Microsoft’s strategy for survival in the future. Prompted by the steamrolling usage of OS-independent Internet and failure of Windows Vista, internal documents of Microsoft have described a project codenamed Midori Twin Daggers on dvd that seemed to be a marked departure from Windows OS.

Midori is centred on the internet and does away with the dependencies that tie Windows to a single PC. It is seen as Microsoft’s answer to rivals’ use of “virtualisation” as a way to solve many of the problems of modern-day computing.

It is also supposed to be a cut-down version of the humongous size of Vista. Yeah right… I’ll believe it when I see it. And judging from Microsoft’s recent track record, the clean final version will probably arrive sometime like 2015.

Apparently cloud computing is the way to go… but the way Streamyx dominates the local broadband market and its sigh-sluggishness, it will be a loooong way to go. I was very excited when the Telekom CTO told me about their plan for fibre-to-the-home high-speed-broadband (HSBB) program last year. From my personal experience in the ISP business, this thing is a capital-guzzler and do not make money (except for the contractors) so it was great that the Govt and Telekom willing to do their national service part.

Sad to say, the green-monsters are now involved, this thing has become politicised and the original plan to have the first service rolled out by end of 2008 will unlikely to materialise. Sigh….

I would surely love the idea of a standard that is available for anyone to build their applications. Imagine if we could build our own add-ons for HTC,SE,Nokia smartphones. The ability to develop applications as add-on is the real killer-apps for succes stories like Facebook or Firefox. It can be an avenue for our entreprising Petaling Street vendors – modified smartphones GUI and applications for as low as RM30 each. This time – it could be legit though.

I’m not much of a console gamer. Especially current generation PS2 games with fast & furious gameplay and dazzling graphics. To tell the truth, I actually felt dizzy and suffered head ache whenever I spent more than 2 mins on my last PS2. Having said that, I want my Wii

Against conventional thinking, the best loved games on Wii do not boast of super-realistic rendering but maintained the mould (albeit souped up) of the lovable Mario Bros. And I love their wireless control. I swear it will make a good exercise playing their tennis and sports games. That alone is good enough for my lovely-other-half to agree for Wii as the next b’day gift. Wiihee!

So it’s no surprising when Reggie (Nintendo America) proudly proclaim that the average Wii sits on shelf for only half an hour before it got sold. 17 months after launch and Wii is still sold out in North Americ – amazing!
