Ushering 2010

Ushering 2010

Today is 01.01.10 – what a beautiful date eh. At this time exactly 10 years ago, people were in trepidation about effects of the so called millennium bug and whether the millions and billions spent for the overnight industry would have saved airplanes from flying off the sky or electronic systems from going haywire. As it turned out the new millennium passed by largely without any fanfare.

Today we are in the next decade of the 21st century. And just by the sound of it – 21st century sounds so futuristic. And so many recent movies and literature referred to the 21st century as the epitome of mankind’s technological advances. The question is – how advanced are we now and have we really meet the expectation of the audience of Jules Verne, George Orwell, HG Wells and the like?

Minority report 02A lot of people is claiming that we are not as advanced as they expect to be. Certainly not as advanced as the Jetsons or the lives in Minority Report.

But is that really so? I believe that there is a lot of things that we’ve taken for granted – but not so long ago they are really high tech stuff. For our benchmark – let’s take the sci-fi films of the 60s and what they perceive the futuristic life in the 21st century to be.

Let’s look at some of them…

  • Mobile Phones have certainly evolved so much. Don’t go so far. On the eve of year 2000, something like iPhone with the touch display, movement sensor, Acelerometer and other stuff like voice activation and satellite navigation would have been the dream gadget of James Bond of the day. When I was a really

young boy – even fixed line telephone is a luxury in my kampung. And later when I was doing map-reading exercise in the jungle in Mersing, a GPS system would have been god-send.

  • DVD the resolution of current DVD and the technology of video making today is actually pretty astounding. And if we look at the latest SSD camcorders – it will certainly match the wild imagination of sci-fi writers in the 60s. Even Sean Connery’s James Bond did not possess the kind of film making arsenal that we can simply pick up off the shelves of Best Denki or Jusco today. Can you still remember the day of VHS and then the oh-so-shiny laser disc? I still have a boxful of LDs that I have no player to play but can’t make myself to throw them away. Any takers out there? Had a viewing a couple of years back. And can’t believe how even the VCDs can look better – let alone Bluray DVDs.
  • Computers have certainly evolved so much. Basically all that was dream of has came true. Even Bill Gates wild prediction of a computer on every home’s desk has came true. Heck it has been surpassed – a computer in each person’s hand is more like it.And, boy, has the computing power improved tremendously? Even the thin notebook nowadays packed computing power superior than super-computer envisaged in the 60s. For that matter, my first contact with a computer Apple IIe with the glowing green characters is nowhere compared to even my Nokia phone today.
  • Internet. is something that no one has imagined to be so prevalent even as early as 15 years back. And how our life today is so much influenced by it and its associated technology like email, IMS etc. In fact, come to think of it, the Internet is very much like the Net in Terminator or even the Matrix itself. Scary uh?

Space 1999

My definitive sci-fi favourite TV series - Space 1999. 10 years passed and we still have seen nothing like it.

On the other hand, there are many facets of the 21st century that we live in today has failed to match the expectation.

  • Jetpack. This is a major letdown…. after all this innovation, we still cannot travel with jetpacks. Really… this is a huge letdown. What happens to the Jetsons mode of transportation? Any young boy 40 years ago would have imagined a futuristic 21st century with people zipping to school or work using cool jetpacks (like the IronMan has). The technology required is no rocket science right? (so to speak lah).

  • Time Machine Another major letdown…. we still have not figure out how to build a time machine. Together with the teleportation system, this is the holy grail of all sci-fi stuff. And it appears that we are nowhere near building a Time Machine than 40 years ago. Hold the press… the giant collider experiment has come out with time bending effects? hu hu..

Maybe there’s still hope – in my lifetime preferably.

  • Space Travel What happens to manned space travel? yes, our angkasawan has floated in space and seen the round blue earth. But we demand actual inter-space travel! We seemed to have regressed here – as at today, there is a big question mark still whether man has actually been to moon. Richard Branson’s audacious space tourism business has yet to take off – as he is busy betting with Tony Fernandes who will be wearing the stewardess dress at the end of 2010 F1 season.

Well… here’s our wish for 2010 and may it herald new breakthroughs in technology and that our adventure will take us to areas that no man has gone before.

Happy New Year folks!
