Handy tip for Firefox

Posted in Ash Report by Ash :: Thursday, 26th April 2007

I just learned today of a nice handy tip for Firefox and I thought it wil be nice to share it here.

If you are a regular web user, over period of time you would have accumulated loads of URLs bookmarked. One day, you want to pay a visit to your best friend blog that you have not visited for months. Now… in which folder have you saved it under?

Wouldn’t it be nice to just type in a simple word… say ‘bff blog’ in the URL part and voila … no more searching around. This is what the tip is about.

Apparently Firefox already has this feature by default. It is called ‘bookmark shortcut’.

First: You need to set up the keyword. Open up the bookmark manager in Firefox

Then: select a bookmarked item and either right click and select “properties” or click the properties button in the toolbar.

Then: In the third option down in the properties list is ‘keyword’. Enter your keyword and then you’ll be able to access that URL by typing the keyword in the URL bar.

Test It: Bookmark this website and key in ‘chip’ as the keyword. Go to URL place (Ctrl+L) and just type in ‘chip’ and press enter. Nice huh…

Okay lah… most of you smart CHIPpers out there probably have known this for ages. But I think this is a real cool feature, especially for those regular websites like maybank2u or your best friend’s blog that you may be too lazy to key in the whole URL.

Anuprakas, I’m not sure if you’re talking about CHIP magazine to be displayed page by page? If true… well this is something that we’re mulling about. Keep watch on this website… the management may issue some announcement pretty soon.
