In my last post I marvelled at development in storage technology. Today, I read that the latest entrant on the market is a USB drive with 128Gb capacity.

I have to laugh when I read that. Here I’m chugging a 2.7kg pre-historic notebook with a 40GB hard disk and at the same time, I could have a much lighter stick with over 3x capacity in my shirt pocket. I read in CHIP magazine some issue ago that I could load my OS with all my settings on a USB drive, together with a number of applications. Theoretically, I don’t need to chug my dinosaur around anymore. I could just put all my stuff in that stick and I could go anywhere and run the stick as if it’s my personal computer.
But seriously, can it in practice run like that? What with all the settings and security imposition on internet cafes and office PCs. Anybody has actually been doing that?
Anyway… I still like that 6 year old dinosaur. There is a lot of memory we had together. And the 10 min start up time is not too bad. I can use the time to queue for my latte and sandwich or take a shower and change of cloth. Life is not all about speed you know.

In CHIP’s August 2009 issue – they reviewed a 256GB USB thumbdrive from Kingston Technology. Wow… that’s way larger than my netbook and PC HDD capacities put together. And it’s about the size of 61 DVDs: better tell my missus that she can put all her Korean serial dramas into one USB drive and clear the shelves for my action movies and animes!
