Chromebooking Your Life

While Google Chromebooks are not a new to the market, brands are still releasing their own iteration of the popular lightweight laptop that runs on Chrome OS. Enter the Acer Chromebook Spin 13. A powerful device to power your everyday needs.

By it being a Chromebook, your access to a few things is limited. For example, you will not be able to install Windows .exe files on the laptop without some tinkering if you really need to have that executable on the laptop. To get apps or programs on the device, you have access to the Android Play Store that hosts a myriad of apps ranging from games to photo editing.

For example, if you wish to process some word documents, all you need to do is just download Google Docs or Microsoft Word and type away. Once you are done with your work for the day, you can also unwind by downloading Netflix to watch your favourite shows, or download games and play the night away. The benefit of having Play Store on the device is that you have access to all the apps that you usually use on your phone on a larger screen.

Speaking of the screen, the device is equipped with a gorgeous 13-inch Quad HD display equipped with an HD camera. The display is covered by Corning Gorilla Glass that is built tough, and another benefit and in our opinion, a must-have on Chromebooks – touchscreen capability. With the touchscreen, the usability of the laptop is enhanced tenfold. Another added benefit to the device is that it is also packaged with a Stylus Pen that you can use to seamlessly write notes and even draw with – if that is your thing. The stylus pen can be stowed away in a slot located in the undercarriage of the laptop.

The Chromebook Spin 13 also sports a weirdly taller body so your usual 15-inch laptop bag will not fit it snugly. With it being taller, it fits a decently sized touchpad along with a large wrist rest area. Its keyboard is also quite comfortable to type on, but you will have to get used to the Chromebook layout, as the function keys are not the one you’re used to with regular keyboards.

In terms of usage, we have been using the Chromebook off and on and it only requires charging every few days. Acer boasts that the device is equipped with a 10-hour battery life. However, we have only used it for YouTube, Netflix and Google Docs. You can work on it without an internet connection, as documents can be saved offline, and it will sync up to your Google Drive when you have an internet connection. In terms of connectivity, you have a USB Type-A port for your peripherals or external drives, two USB Type-C ports, and a microSD slot. However, you will have to sacrifice a USB Type-C port if you wish to charge the device. Being a “Spin” device, you can use it in a few different ways, if you just want to sit back and watch a movie, simply turn it to Tent Mode, and if you wish to just take notes, you can turn it to tablet mode. With all these said, the Acer Chromebook Spin 13 is one of the most powerful Chromebooks out there right now and coupled with an elegant design makes it a good alternative to a Windows laptop. However, with great specs, comes high pricing.

CHIP CONCLUDE: A powerful Chromebook with additional features such as a touchscreen and a stylus but is on the expensive side. (RECOMMENDED)
