Picking up a router has to be one of the most confusing things to do for those not savvy with technology. And even those who are may not understand the many types of routers that are available in the market. Is it single-band, dual-band, MIMO, AC or N? You’ll usually get a new router because your current one breaks down, or you may have to upgrade since your internet provider gave you a router that doesn’t utilise the full potential and speed of your subscribed internet package.

So to get the best out of your internet experience, it’s always great to upgrade your router sometime down the road. A choice could be the Totolink A800R, which is a dual-band AC1200 router. Dual-band routers allow you to create two separate wireless SSID’s, one usually uses the 5GHz band and the other is a 2.4GHz band. Most devices are only capable of using the 2.4GHz band, while higher end products are capable of using the 5GHz band.

Bands matter because the 5GHz band here is capable of outputting up to 867Mbps of bandwidth while the 2.4GHz band can output up to 300Mbps. Combined you get a total of 1167Mbps across the two bands – hence it being an AC1200 router. If you’re wondering what an AC router is, “AC” is a network standard that succeeds the “N” network standard. It’s better at providing long range speeds than the “N” standard, and practically all products are now made with the “AC” standard.

The router also supports MU-MIMO technology that you should look out for, as it simply allows for stronger and faster connections. An additional caveat that we like about the router was the ability to change some basic settings through your smartphone using an app. The steps to do so were also simple and direct, so anyone can do it. Ease of setup is also similar, just connect all the required cables and follow the steps provided in the instructions and your internet will be up and running in no time.

CHIP CONCLUDE: The Totolink A800R is a simple router that does its job without much hassle and provides dual-band at an incredibly low price.
