The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro is one of Xiaomi’s latest device that was shown off in 2018. And for this month’s issue, we finally managed to get our hands on the device. Right out of the box, you will notice that the phone has a few unique aesthetics. It features a transparent back that allows you to peek into the (supposedly) inner workings of the device. While cool, it serves no other use other than just being aesthetically pleasing, as the real components are still safely hidden underneath. The phone’s power button and charging port are painted red, similar to some of the devices we’ve seen this year, giving it that little bit of extra pizazz.
Looks aside, the phone does come with pretty respectable specs that put it alongside the flagship devices of other brands, especially with its Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset and 8GB of RAM. This basically means that the latest mobile games will pose no issue to the device. In our tests, we ran through a few graphically demanding games and it held up pretty well, even after having them running after a while. With a 3,000 mAh battery the phone could easily tackle a full day’s of regular use, but will run out much faster if you use it for full on media consumption and gaming.
With flagship specs, you could also assume that the camera of the phone is a powerhouse. The device does feature a dual rear camera setup, with a 12-megapixel telephoto lens and a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens. However, we did find that the phone does tend to overemphasise the amount of blur applied to objects that are not in focus. But, the phone is capable of taking great shots and with the 20-megapixel front camera, selfies will be sublime. Coupled with AI-assisted functions and beautify, your face will be blemish free.
The display is as you would expect from a phone released in 2018. There is a notch to go with a near bezel-less display, though the screen does have a chin at the bottom. The colours are vivid, and the display does get pretty bright and can be easily used under the sun. You won’t be able to see a physical fingerprint reader on this phone, since it features an on-screen fingerprint reader instead, along with facial recognition to unlock your device.
CHIP CONCLUDE: The Mi 8 Pro by itself is a great device that will impress you if you are looking for a daily phone with a great camera and great display. Coupled with the unique design, your phone will be the envy of many.
