Respawn Entertainment, the creators behind heavy octane fast-paced shooter, Titanfall, literally dropped a bomb in February with the unexpected launch of the latest entry in the Battle Royale stew with Apex Legends.
In Apex Legends you are partied up with two other people, be it randoms or friends to form a party of three. Just like any other BR game, you scrounge up loot from wherever you can and take the fight to other squads. You win when you are the last squad standing. Sadly, when you win there will be no chicken dinners that await you. However, when you go into the next game, you might be hailed as the champion (it depends if there’s another champion from another game that scored higher than you) and those that kill you could gain extra EXP.
While Apex Legends is yet another BR game, it does borrow ideas from other games out there to make it one of the best BR games out there right now. It features Legends that perform differently from each other. For example, Bloodhound has a passive ability that allows him to see tracks left behind from enemies, and his active ability will briefly reveal enemies near him, even if they’re behind walls. While other Legends such as Pathfinder has a grappling hook that allows him to reach hard-to-reach areas quickly. His Ultimate Ability allows him to create a Zipline from his current position to a target location that can be used by everyone, enemies included.
Another helpful feature added to the game known as Pings are extremely valuable. It allows you to communicate with your team without typing and voice comms. Pinging allows you to inform your teammates of enemies, weapon and armour pickups, or locations that you wish to explore. If you see armour that is not picked up and your teammate is waltzing around with one. Ping it and they might run to you and pick it up. Pinging enemies will also serve as a heads-up to your teammates of potential threats. It is an amazing tool that can help those that prefer to game without voice comms. And speaking of voice comms, the game can even be set to transcribe voice comms into text.
Apex Legends is set in the world of Titanfall, where Titans and wall-running are the staples of the universe. The devs mentioned that they did originally try to implement them, but they did not fit into the BR style of gameplay. Apex Legends is a Free-To-Play game, and all you need is an EA Origins account. Yes, you heard that right, EA acquired the studio back in 2017. Similar to Fortnite, Apex Legends will have a Battle Pass system, offering new legends, weapons and loots to the owners. There are currently four seasons for the game, with the first one kicking off in March 2019.
In just one week alone, Apex Legends managed to draw in 25 million players all over the world with over two million concurrent players. As mentioned, the game is free to play and there are micro-transactions for cosmetics and two locked legends, they are not required to play the game. It is definitely one of the most polished F2P games out the right now.
