Announcing a new Canon EOS R System, some new lenses and accessories

Today, we were whisked away to one of the tallest buildings in Malaysia, the KL Tower to experience and feel the new Canon EOS R System that consists of a EOS R full-frame mirrorless camera, four RF lenses, three new types of RF mount adapters and a battery grip. The EOS R System is created in mind for the enthusiasts and professionals, while offering a lightweight mirrorless camera with functions that rival a DSLR. Enabling the user extended flexibility to create their masterpieces throughout the world while maintaining a user-friendly control scheme.

The new 54mm-diameter RF mount sports a short flange focal distance of 20mm along with 12-pin contact points for better communication between the lens and the camera body. This allows data to be sent to the in-camera Digital Lens Optimiser to correct diffraction, distortion and so on without affecting shooting speed.

As for the camera itself, it sports a 30.3-megapixel full-frame CMOS Sensor and 0.05 second AF speed that allows you to hone in on your target and snap away with them in focus, as it is the world’s first camera with auto focus ability of EV-6, allowing you to maintain focus in low-light conditions, even in near complete darkness. During the event, we were taken to a dark room and took pictures using the new camera. It allowed us to tune the ISO levels to 40,000 and you can take pictures in the dark and it’ll come out as bright! The noise levels were quite reasonable too. You can also choose from as many as 5,655 AF positions that allows for more flexible composition.

When it comes to controls, the camera is built with most of its buttons customisable to your own liking, as every photographer shoots differently and requires convenient buttons to perform the tasks that they need during that moment. When you are using the EVF and wish to switch AF point, you can simply do so by dragging or touching the screen. It is also the first Canon camera to have FV exposure mode that allows direct control in one single mode for shutter speed, aperture and ISO sensitivity, and all can even be viewed on the EVF. On the camera, you can even trigger a Silent Shutter mode that turns the camera completely silent, with only a flashing border on the EVF or LCD to indicate that a picture is taken.

Aside from the camera itself, Canon is also premiering a myriad of new lenses and new mount adapters that allow you to utilise your older lenses on the new camera. A battery grip is also announced for the EOS R that fits two batteries with direct charging as well.

Currently, Canon is having a pre-order promotion that starts on the 26th of September until the 8th of October that offers you a free mount adapter, a 64GB SD card and the LP-E6N battery pack if you pre-order the EOS R system. For the body only, the EOS R is priced at RM9,888.00, while the body with a 24-105mm kit lens is priced at RM14,688.00.
