A new DotA2 major to be held in Malaysia
Malaysia DotA2 (Defense of the Ancients 2) fans better prep their voices again, as we were introduced to yet another major tournament, but this marks the first time a Major is held in Malaysia for the year 2018.
The Kuala Lumpur Major 2018 is brought to Malaysia by the good people of PGL, eGG Network and Imba TV, along with a plethora of other brands and partners such as U Mobile, HyperX, Astro, Acer Predator, Intel and even KFC Delivery. Maybe if you attend the event you can have KFC delivered to you right at the arena. Speaking of arena, the Major is held in Bukit Jalil, specifically the Axiata Arena.
Yesterday, YB Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, the Minister of Malaysia Youth and Sports said: “Malaysia is among the ‘Big 6’ esports nations in South East Asia that accounts for over 98% of esports enthusiasts in this region. South East Asia is the fastest growing region for esports, with the number of esports enthusiasts expected to double to 19.8 million in 2019, from 9.5 million back in 2016. Malaysia has the potential to be the region’s esports hub because our youths are passionate about esports.”
Not too long ago, our country is even capable of boasting by having two major teams located in Malaysia in the form of Mineski and Fnatic. Fnatic had recently released a few notable players, but we would expect them to challenge and make an appearance in the tournament. Even in the recently passed The International 8, a Malaysian by the name of Yap ‘xNova’ Jian Wei from PSG.LGD reached the finals of the tournament but was sadly defeated by the eventual champions, OG.
According to Silviu Stroie, the CEO of PGL Esports mentioned that there will not be any direct invites, and this means that even local unknown teams could vie for a spot in the tournament. But before they could do so, they will have to fight other teams during the open qualifier rounds. On September 16th to the 21st, teams will battle it out in the qualifiers. Winners will then compete in the group stage on the 9th and 10th of November, while the playoffs after that will take place on the 11th to the 18th of November. The dates of the main event is set as well, and lands on the 16th to the 18th of November. Teams will fight for DPC points and a $1,000,000 prize pool.
For those interested in attending the event, U Mobile customers will be able to purchase tickets with 20% discount during the Pre-Sale that starts today (6th Sept) until the 16th of September. Ticketing for non U Mobile users will begin on the 17th of September with varying prices depending on seating, ranging from RM180 to RM600. For more info, head on to the official site.
