Last week, ASUS and ROG announced a few new products within their repertoire with the new ROG Zephyrus S and Strix SCAR II. Both are powerhouse laptops meant for gaming, offering a combination between slim and powerful for portable gaming.
First up, we have the Strix Scar II (GL704). It comes dressed with a massive 17.3-inch near bezel-less display with a 144HZ of refresh rate and 3 ms of response time, thanks to the collaboration with AUO for their IPS-type AHVA technology. It is currently the most compact 17-inch gaming laptop in the market right now as it is less than 400mm wide – measuring at just 399.8×273.5×26.4mm. As for the specs, it comes equipped with Windows 10, a choice of Intel Core 8th gen processors of i7-8750H or i5-8300H. As for the graphics, you have a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 to power up your games. You can also fit it with up to 32GB of RAM, 512GB of SSD and 1TB of HDD. There is also a version of the laptop with a 17.3-inch display with just 60Hz.
The Strix Scar II also comes packed with AURA Sync on the customisable lighting on a total of seven zones. Four on the keyboard, two on the lightbar that is located on the front of the laptop, and the ROG logo. The lights on the laptop can also be synced along with other Aura Sync capable peripherals. Using the newly introduced program – Armoury Crate the now unified control centre for all things customisable. You can use it to configure the aforementioned Aura Sync lighting, switch up profiles for games, change up the performance of the laptop and so on. As for ports, the Scar II has four USB Type-A ports for all your peripherals, a USB Type-C port, a mini DisplayPort with G-SYNC support and a HDMI 2.0 port.
The other star of the show, the Zephyrus S is the world’s slimmest gaming laptop, measuring at just 15.75mm thick! An upgrade over last year’s Zephyrus, it now has an 8th Gen Intel Core i7-8750H processor with a choice of NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 with Max-Q technology or a GTX 1060. If you do get the 1070 variation, you can have up to 16GB of DDR4 RAM, while the GTX 1060 variation can have up to 24GB of DDR4 RAM. Storage wise, you can have two M.2 drives of up to 1TB. As for the display, you have a 15.6-inch Full HD IPS panel of 144Hz.
The Zephyrus S still maintains a unique design chassis to keep the laptop cool when you are gaming. When the lid of the laptop is raised, the special vent underneath the chassis will open along with it as well, letting more air in to keep the laptop cool when you are gaming or working on the laptop. Armoury Crate is also available on the laptop as well.
