GARMIN is back again in Malaysia, this time – launching brand new watches within the Fenix 5 series with the fenix 5 Plus, fenix 5S Plus and fenix 5X Plus! GARMIN has been steadily taking on the local smartwatch market with their very products, so they’re not new to the fight! But let’s dive into the specs of the smartwatch.
The fenix 5 Plus series is designed with a rugged outlook with a combination of strengthened glass, stainless steel, titanium, fibre-reinforced polymer and so on. If you are a fan of tough watches, then this could just be the watch for you as it allows you to use without much stress, especially for people that are more tuned towards outdoors activities. And speaking of outdoor activities, the fenix 5 Plus is built with built-in mapping and navigational features. This allows you to stay on course whenever you’re hiking and so on, so you will not be lost in a pinch. Also for runners and cyclists, the map will also make use of GARMIN Connect data that shows you the best routes for jogging and cycling. The watch will utilise GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellite reception to keep track of where you are, especially when GPS is not usable. The watch is also capable of tracking up to 30 different sports, be it indoors or outdoors activities.
Aside from its rugged looks, the watch can also store up to 500 songs all on the watch with its 16GB internal storage. Simply connect a pair of Bluetooth earphones to the watch and you are good to go! According to Mr. Dickson Chia, the Marketing Executive for Aeco Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd, the watch currently can only be used with Deezer and iHeartRadio when it comes to streaming services, and GARMIN is looking to add more streaming services in the near future. The watch is also packed with GARMIN Pay that allows you to wireless pay with just your watch using NFC. But currently, it can’t be used in Malaysia yet as the local banks have yet to authorise this feature. Also included on the watch is the Elevate wrist heart rate technology that will track your heart rate. Aside from heart rate, the watch also tracks your sleep and counts your step as well!
A new feature to the fenix 5 series, the Wrist-based Pulse Ox Sensor that will sense your oxygen levels even at higher elevations is only available with the fenix 5X Plus series. So if you’re an avid fan of climbing, you will be better off with the 5X. As a normal smartwatch, you can also sync up your calendar with the watch so it can notify you if there’s any upcoming events. This will allow you to stay connected with your daily routine, all on your watch.
The main difference between the fenix 5 Plus series is with its size. The fenix 5S Plus comes with a 42mm body, while the normal fenix 5 Plus is packed with a 47mm body. As for the 5X Plus, it is the largest of them all with a 51mm body. The display is still the same on all of them – a 1.20-inch display, with a 240 x 240 resolution.
The GARMIN fenix 5 Plus series can be purchased now from AECO Technologies (M) Sdn Bhd as they are the sole distributor, and from authorised concept stores all around Malaysia. The prices are as follows, with six different variants:
