Last night, we were invited to the ONYX Theatre within GSC Midvalley to witness the livestream of the Note9 at New York with popcorn and soda! Before the stream started, Samsung played some trailers and it set expectations pretty high with promise of a larger battery, better connection and so on.
Then DJ Koh (Dong-Jin Koh) the President and CEO of Samsung Electronics took the stage to present the new Note9, Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Home. So let’s take a deep dive into these devices and their specs! The first one they talked about was the Note9. This time it will be the best Note device they created to date and right out of the boat, it boasts a massive 4,000 mAh battery. After taking a step back from the Note7 fiasco and playing it safe with the Note8. As for the processor, it comes with two different variants of a 10nm 64-bit Octa-core processor (most likely an Exynos and a Snapdragon 845).
Another huge thing that Samsung talked about was with storage capacity. This time, the base model of the Note9 is equipped with a 128GB internal storage, and can be upgraded with a 512GB microSD card. The larger variant, will be sporting a 512GB internal storage that can also be upgraded with a 512GB microSD card. That tops the total amount of storage to 1TB on a mobile phone. That’s a ridiculous amount of storage! Other than that, the 128GB variant will be coming with 6GB of RAM, while the larger variant will be sporting 8GB of RAM.
The phone is still IP68 rated for water resistant, and will also run on Android 8.1 right out of the box. There were no mention of Android P, but we expect it to land soon on the device anyway. As for the display, it comes with a hefty 6.4-inch Quad HD+ Super AMOLED display with no notch! Compared to the Note8, the bezels are slightly smaller, but according to some, it might be larger than the Galaxy S9. The camera is also upgraded according to Samsung, and the fingerprint reader is now relocated to the bottom of the camera, saving you the annoyance of smudging the cameras.
And speaking of cameras, the rear cameras of the Note9 comes with a standard dual camera setup of a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens and a 12-megapixel telephoto lens. We hoped that they would challenge the Pixel 2 for best camera, but we have to wait and test it out, to see if its improved. As for the front camera, you have an 8-megapixel shooter for all your selfie needs. And on the subject of selfies, the S Pen is now upgraded with the capability of to take pictures, and change cameras. By utilising Bluetooth Low-Energy, controlling the phone by a click of the S Pen allows for more funky uses as Samsung allows developers to tweak what it does.
A new Galaxy Watch and Galaxy Home was also announced, but we’ll save those for a later date, as the star of the show was indeed the new Samsung Galaxy Note9. Currently, you can pre-order the device from the link below.
