When it comes to lenses, cameras, audio devices and so on, Sony does not shy away from creating magnificent products to suit the market. The new FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS lens is no different. According to Sony, the new lens is the lightest super telephoto lens in the 400mm F2.8 lens class.
The new lens just weighs in at 2,895g. To achieve that, three fluorite elements were utilised, and it reduces the number of elements that are placed in the front of the lens barrel. Aside from that, durable magnesium alloy components also contributed to the reduced weight, allowing for easy portability and handling. Therefore, using it in handheld or monopod will be not much of an issue with this lens.
Speaking of durability, the lens is also designed with a dust and moisture resistant design that allows you to use the camera even in harsher conditions. Especially with the magnesium alloy build that already reduces the weight while staying tough. The front of the lens is also coated with a fluorine coating that allows you to easily wipe smudges, dirt, dust and fingerprints off the lens.
For professionals, several settings can be found on the lens such as, Full-time DMF that allows you to manually focus on your target by rotating the focus ring, even when shooting in AF-C mode. Especially when you’re shooting at high-paced events or environments, the new STEADYMODE 3 setting enables you to have optimum stabilisation when shooting fast moving targets. On the lens itself, you can find four focus hold buttons along with a focus ring with Linear Response MF that increases the versatility of the lens to be used almost anywhere.
The three fluorite elements will also reduce chromatic aberration, while the Spherical aberration is controlled during manufacturing, enabling you to have high quality bokeh when shooting with the lens. Utilising the new XD (Extreme Dynamic) Linear Motors, the lens is capable of sporting up to 5x better performance when it comes to tracking moving subjects. Along with the improvement in developed algorithm, the lens will be able to focus with more speed are more precision than ever before.
The FE 400mm F2.8 GM OSS large aperture super-telephoto prime lens will fit Sony’s large line-up of high-speed E-mount bodies that includes – the a9, a7R III and much more. If you wish to purchase the lens, it is currently on a pre-order basis only, and available at just RM52,699.
