Very early this morning, OnePlus, the smartphone brand that specialises on smartphones with an affordable price, yet boasting flagship specs. The event took place in London, and was livestreamed from OnePlus’ official YouTube site.
Carl Pei, the Director for OnePlus Global kick-started the event by introducing the world the OnePlus Bullets Wireless earbuds. As the name implies, it is OnePlus’ very first pair of wireless earbuds. However, do note that it is not truly wireless, so you will still have wires along the build. The earbuds will be using USB Type-C to charge, and all it needs is 10 minutes of charge to last you 5 hours. Google Assistant is also integrated into the earbuds. The buds are aluminium built, and can be magnetically snapped together when not in use. He even mentioned that you can simply snap them together to pause your music, and when unsnapped, your music will resume play.
However, the star of the show for this event is the OnePlus 6. The OnePlus 6, just like their other devices are padded with amazing specs, yet keeping the low price that will drive a budget-minded consumer hysterical. It is equipped with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor, a choice of 6GB or 8GB of RAM, 64GB to 256GB of internal storage. There were no mention of expandable storage ala microSD, so it might’ve been omitted. It feature’s a 6.28-inch display, with 19:9 ratio. The device also comes with a notch, so you can add it to the list of “Smartphone Lookbook for 2018”. It is powered with a 3,300 mAh battery and features a glass back. For wired headphone lovers, the headphone jack is still present on the device. They have also announced that the OnePlus 6 will be the first phone to allow access to Android P Beta.
Camera wise, you can spot a 20-megapixel + 16-megapixel rear camera setup that comes with OIS and EIS when shooting videos. A 16-megapixel front camera completes the whole look. According to early previews, when shooting portrait mode with the rear camera, you can even turn the bokeh into heart shapes. A nifty feature for those with pretty faces.
The device is not IP rated, but OnePlus has assured everyone that it will still be able to handle sweat, rain and minimal water. The inclusion of a glass back on the device marks the first attempt on a glass-backed device from OnePlus and is made from Corning Gorilla Glass 5 to make it more durable. You can still find a rear fingerprint sensor below the rear cameras.
As for the pricing, the 6GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at $529 (RM 2,100 converted) , while the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage is marked at $579 (RM 2,298 converted), and the 8GB RAM + 256GB storage is priced at a decent $629 (RM 2,497 converted). Definitely affordable, but the prices will most likely be slightly higher when it reaches local grounds. As for colours, the OnePlus 6 will launch with Mirror Black and Midnight Black come the 22nd of May, the official global release date. A limited Silk White edition will also be available for sale on the 5th of June. The Silk White will come with a white device, with rose gold trims.
