The Alpha Cam

Sony’s bringing out the big guns with the Sony a7R III, a full frame camera designed to tackle the needs of professionals. For the purpose of our review, we were provided with the beautiful FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS zoom lens, which is ideal for both short to semi-long range shots. The camera is compatible with most if not all E-mount lenses, so you’ll have a wide variety of options to work with.

The a7R uses a 35mm full frame 42.4MP Exmor R CMOS sensor, which allows the a7R to reach extremely high sensitivities of up to 102,400 ISO. With up to 425 focus points, the camera gives you absolute control over your auto focus, down to the most miniscule of details. The a7R’s Fast Hybrid AF also does wonders when tracking and keeping people who are moving in focus, making the a7R great for photographing moving subjects. Thanks to Sony’s 5-axis body stabilisation system, we were able to take photos without any camera shake in low light conditions when we needed that extra exposure time.

This camera takes excellent pictures and it has great controls for an amazing experience. The ability to shoot silently is a plus for those who are doing nature shoots as it won’t alert wildlife, and 10fps means you’ll be able to capture plenty of shots. If you’re a content creator, it can also do 4K recordings, which can be transferred to your PC fast using USB Type-C for smooth workflow. There are two SD card slots that are easily accessible, both supporting cards that are UHS-2 compliant.

The camera controls are solid and tactile, while having just the right amount of resistance so that you don’t accidentally change your settings. Everything was in easy reach, even the controls for the LCD screen. Additionally, the camera felt exceptionally comfortable in our hands. It had a nice ergonomic design that enables it to fit surprisingly well in the variety of hands we have in the office. Controls are placed strategically, enabling a very natural feel when it comes to adjusting settings while taking shots.

CHIP CONCLUDE: Perfect for professionals, casual photographers, or content creators that are into shooting videos.
