Carbon Over And Game

MSI’s the name and Threadripper’s the game, so if you’re looking for a Threadripper motherboard it’s hard to go wrong with one from MSI. It’s packed full of features that’ll make enthusiasts wanting more and modders from keeping their wallets closed. Not to mention the performance that comes with those looks.

Modders out there will probably love the carbon theme, and why wouldn’t you? With RGB Mystic Light Sync there’s just so much you can do when it comes to illuminating your PC. There’s also mounting specifically for 3D printed parts to further accommodate the modder’s spirit within you. Mystic Light and the 3D X-Mounting opens a lot of avenues for modding with different combinations of components, ranging from coolers to gaming peripherals.

If you maybe want to change things up, there are additional heatsink covers provided in the box for you to swap whenever you feel creative. But aesthetics aren’t the only thing going for the board, since it’s a solid product from top to bottom. All PCI-e x16 slots are protected with MSI’s Steel Armor and each M.2 slot is protected by an M.2 Shield, which acts as a heatsink to stave off throttling.

Speaking of heat, the board has an abundance of headers meant to cater to watercooling builds that’s only limited by your imagination. The headers give you full control of your fans, which can be done using the MSI Command Center or even in the BIOS. Before we forget the board also comes with a WiFi card module in case you prefer it.

When it comes to overclocking, the board is packed with all the bells and whistles for a successful overclock. It comes with 13 power phases, load-line calibration, OC Engine 2 that ends up translating to our smooth and worry free overclock. There’s also BIOS Flashback+ to flash over the BIOS to an older one if you ever screwed up with a new one. Flashback even works with just the power cables attached.

CHIP CONCLUDE: If you’re in the market for a motherboard for overclocking, modding, and hardcore gaming you can’t make a mistake with the MSI X399 GAMING PRO CARBON AC.
