The commercialisation march for e-sports continues, with Celcom – supported by Iskandar Investment – announcing “The Major League, Championed by Celcom”. It is a Dota 2 tournament set to run from the 20 to 22 October 2017 and will feature a prize pool of RM300,000.

Datuk Ir. Khairil Anwar Ahmad, President and CEO of IIB, said: “The e-sports industry has been gaining a steady recognition and seen a rapid rise in popularity and participation, especially here in Malaysia. We are very happy to host Asia’s premier Dota 2 tournament at our world-class indoor arena at EduCity Sports Complex in Iskandar Puteri.” He also mentioned that IIB will be looking to help create a strong e-sports ecosystem based on the arena and that e-sports fans can expect more e-sports collaborations in the future.

To be held at the EduCity Indoor Arena at Iskandar Puteri, Johor Bahru, The Major League is Iskandar Investment Berhad’s (IIB) first foray into e-sports and its bid to forge the venue into an e-sports for Southeast Asia. Prior to the event’s finals, there will also be a series of qualifiers for Malaysian teams, who will get the chance to play against some of the best teams in the world, including EHOME, Evos, Clutch and MVP Revolution. Three other invited teams will be announced in the future.

The event is organised by The Livescape Group and Beatnation, with qualifier rounds planned to be hosted at participating local cybercafé, which include Apple Dream Net, Orange E-Sports, Blitzone, Digital Fortress, and The Pantheon. A host of brands are also backing up the event, including HP, Logitech, eGG Network, and more.
