Malaysian e-sports fan have something to be excited about, because the Electronic Sports of Malaysia (ESM) has announced that it will be hosting first ever ASEAN Games for E-Sports 2016 (AGES 2016). The inaugural event will be held in Malaysia from 18th to 20th March 2016. For this event, the three titles that have been chosen for competition are: Defense of the Ancients 2 (DOTA 2), FIFA 16 and Counter Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO).

However, ESM can’t take all credit, for it is a joint effort by the Asean Confederation of E-Sports (ACES) that Malaysia is part of. ACES also consists of the Singapore Cybersports & Online Gaming Association (SCOGA), Thailand Esports Association (TESA), Philippines Esports Organisation (“PESO”), and Indonesian eSports Association (“IeSPA”).

During an event yesterday, the official logo for AGES 2016 was unveiled by Yang Berhormat Datuk M.Saravanan. The mock cheque for the total prize money of RM1mil was also handed over to ESM by Platinum Eden Sdn Bhd to ESM. This is by far the largest prize pool in the SEA region thus far, though the ESL Manila Dota 2 competition in the Philippines in April will eclipse it by about RM40k (total is USD250k). At the event, a Memorandum of Understanding was also signed between ESM, SCOGA, Platinum Eden Sdn Bhd and Friends Worldwider, with the latter two being the official organiser and co-organiser for AGES 2016.

Besides the main event, the organisers also plan to include an outdoor carnival. It will be open to the public and should have food as well as booths with activities.

Speaking at the event, ESM’s President, Dato’ Latt Shariman Abdullah pointed out that the new event is the first event to be organised and sanctioned by ESM, which has before this only played a minor part in some of the events hosted locally. He said that AGES’s objective is to help grow the e-sports scene in Malaysia, with the ultimate aim of becoming a world-class hub for e-sports. In order to do this, ESM will be focussing on five key areas: the welfare of gamers, standards, education, community development and international recognition.

Those who are interested in getting tickets or to participate in the competitions will be able to do so at www.ages.my after Chinese New Year.
