Overkill Done Right

ASUS is pushing on hard with its line of high-end GPUs, no thanks to the growing number of PC enthusiasts right now in Malaysia. The ASUS ROG 980Ti Matrix Platinum is easily one of the biggest air-cooled graphics cards we’ve seen from the company, and boy does it pack a big punch as well.

The base clock for the Matrix Platinum comes in at 1,216MHz, which is a whopping 216MHz higher than the base clock on the reference 980 Ti. That’s not all of course as the card is capable of clocking even higher numbers no thanks to the GPU Boost feature. As with the standard 980 Ti, the Matrix Platinum also comes with 6GB of GDDR5 memory, making it a very powerful card for overclocking and gaming, especially if you’re looking to do so at 4K resolution.

At the back, the Matrix Platinum sports one DVI port, one HDMI port and three DisplayPorts, allowing this one GPU to be hooked up to three displays at any one time. To power it up, two 8-pin PCIe power plugs are required, and the card also features a 12-phase power system for more stable power delivery.

As far as feature-set goes, the 980 Ti Matrix Platinum is a dream come true for many overclocking enthusiasts. While the cooling block and fan can easily sustain high levels of overclocking on its own, ASUS has also made it so that you can remove the cooler for you to do extreme overclocking with this GPU.

The card sports LED lights that change colour depending on the load that is being placed on the GPU, and also a defroster feature that helps prevent condensation when hardcore overclockers do their thing. And fret not if your overclocking endeavours bring you over the limit, as it also sports a Safe Mode button that allows you to reset your overclocking values to safer limits.

Performance-wise, the 980 Ti Matrix Platinum is easily one of the most powerful GPUs we’ve come across out-of-the-box. While we didn’t have any 4K monitors to test it with, at 1,440p resolution, the card crunches any game it comes across with relative ease, be it Shadow of Mordor, Star Wars Battlefront and more.

Overclocking is also clearly one of the Matrix Platinum’s best features, as even with just air-cooling, we managed to boost the GPU clock higher than the boost clock range with relative ease.

CHIP CONCLUDE: The ASUS 980 Ti Matrix Platinum is easily one of the most powerful graphics cards in the market right now. Regardless if you’re a hardcore gamer or overclocker, it will definitely not disappoint you.
