An update to the original Tab S tablet, the Tab S2 tablet was announced by Samsung Malaysia as part of its line of premium tablets. Designed to look similar to the Note series, the new Tab S2 is the company’s slimmest and lightest tablet to date.

“The Galaxy Tab S2 is not only our thinnest and lightest tablet of its size ever, it also provides users stunning Super AMOLED display which is perfectly optimised for viewing any type of digital content. We believe the Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 is the most complete personal companion device designed for consumers to carry and use in all walks of life,” said Lee Jui Siang, Vice President, Mobile IT & Digital Imaging at Samsung Malaysia Electronics.

Two different designs will be available on sale – the 8 inch and 9.7 inch sizes. Both tablets feature Samsung’s Exynos octacore processor, 3GB of RAM, 32GB of ROM which is expandable with microSD up to 128GB and 8 megapixel sensor for the back camera, with a f/1.9 lens.

Differentiating the two models are the screen sizes. The 8 inch screen comes with a 2048 x 1536 pixels QXGA screen, while the 9.7 inch shares the same resolution. This makes the smaller screen achieve a higher pixel density of 320 pixels per inch, to compare with the larger sibling of 263 pixels per inch.

To fulfil the needs for user’s productivity and entertainment needs, Samsung has bundled related applications into the Tab S2. For the former, Samsung hooked up with Microsoft to feature their productivity apps on the tablet. This means Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneDrive and OneNote is installed out of the box on the Tab S2. Plus, new Tab S2 owners gets 100GB of free cloud storage on OneDrive with every activation.

For entertainment, Samsung’s own Milk Music streaming service and iflix movie & video streaming service apps are in the new Tab S2. Milk features curated music list, and an extensive radio station selection while iflix is Malaysia’s first video content streaming services, with content coming from the US, Asia and Malaysia.

The Tab S2 is priced at RM 1,699 for the 8 inch version, and RM 1,999 for the 9.7 inch tablet variant. The tablet is available to purchase from the 14th of August, and with each purchase of a Tab S2, users will get a year’s premium service of iflix for free. Samsung’s Milk Music service meanwhile will be starting from RM 9.99 per month.
