Olympus TG-860

What can we say about the touch series from Olympus? This line has been the mainstay for weatherproof compact camera since its first debut as part of the Olympus µ line way back in 2006. After so many models, Olympus has refined their offering, and the TG-860 represents the company’s latest take on the Tough model for the masses.

Supplementing the TG-4 model, the TG-860 is their more main stream model that still embodies the Tough spirit and soul. About the size of a normal compact camera, Olympus has nevertheless fitted the TG-860 with both a wide angle and zoom lens. The wide angle is set at 21mm – one of the widest ever in a consumer compact camera. Thanks to the Tough series unique lens arrangement, Olympus managed to fit a 5x zoom lens in the body, without any lens protrusion visible out of the camera.

16 megapixels is the sensor resolution for the TG-860, with ISO sensitivity going all the way to 6400. You also get sensor stabilisation in the camera, so shaky shots should be a thing of the past.
A 180-degree flip LCD gives the TG-860 great presence while shooting. Now, you can selfie with an all-terrain camera anytime and anywhere. The three-inch screen is also large and bright enough for even the sunniest of days, thanks to the backlight boost feature.

Of course if you need control, the traditional PASM mode dial is included in the body, so you can control how your photos look like, in an easy-to-access manner.
A feature that the TG-860 has that trumps many other compact camera is its toughness. It can stand dives of up to 15 metres, drop from 2 metres high, and even freezing temps of up to -10 degrees Celsius. This is the best camera for snorkelling, as the camera also feature underwater white balance for the best image possible.
Of course if you need extra depth, Olympus has an optional deep water case, which gives it three times the depth at 45 metres. Best of all, you still get zoom capabilities!

CHIP CONCLUDE: A great small and compact camera for you to slip into your swimming togs, or hang from your hiking backpack.
